Moving day for your desk: pack, transport and re-level like a pro

A height-adjustable standing desk is a daily workhorse. When it’s time to move—across the room or across town—treat it like precision equipment. A careful breakdown protects electronics, saves reassembly time and keeps your frame smooth and stable in the new space. Use this pro checklist to pack, transport and re-level your electric standing desk without drama.

One week out: prep and photograph

  • Snapshot everything: Take clear photos of your setup—topside, back edge, under-desk tray and monitor arm routing. Shoot close-ups of keypad wiring and control box ports. Photos cut setup time in half.

  • Label both ends: Tag HDMI/DisplayPort, USB-C, power and Ethernet cables. Reuse the same color on both ends so swaps are obvious.

  • Inventory small parts: Zip a small bag for Allen keys, spare screws and the arm’s VESA hardware. Tape the bag under the desktop so it doesn’t wander.

Disassembly that respects the gear

  • Power down and unplug: Shut down your computer. Unplug the surge strip from the wall. Coil the single mains cable and secure it with Velcro.

  • Drop the weight: Remove monitors, arms, speakers and anything heavy from the surface. Detach the monitor arm(s) and store VESA screws in the bag.

  • Empty the tray: Remove the power strip and dock from the cable tray. Coil cables in figure eights so they don’t kink and label each coil.

  • Protect the keypad and controller: Disconnect keypad and motor/control box cables gently at the connectors—never yank. Coil and label them.

Move the frame without damage

  • Keep columns vertical: Stand legs upright during transport to protect telescoping sections. Do not carry the desk by the desktop alone—lift from the frame.

  • Remove the top or keep it on: If the path is tight or the top is heavy, separate the top from the frame. If you move it assembled, strap the top to the frame so it doesn’t shift.

  • Protect edges and ports: Wrap corners of the desktop, keypad and leg ends with foam or moving blankets. Tape loose cables to the frame so nothing dangles and catches.

  • Team lift: For stairs or narrow turns, use two people. Your back will thank you.

Transport and arrival

  • Vehicle loading: Lay the top flat with padding or stand the frame on its feet strapped to a wall side. Avoid resting weight on the keypad or control box.

  • First placement: In the new room, leave 2–3 inches between the desk and the wall for cable clearance at full height. Place the frame on a level section of floor; adjust foot glides to remove rocking.

Rebuild the ecosystem

  • Mount the cable tray first: Reinstall the tray near the rear center of the desk so weight stays over the legs. Confirm screw length won’t pierce the top.

  • Reinstall power: Mount the surge-protected power strip and the dock inside the tray. Route the single mains cable down an inside leg raceway to the outlet.

  • Reattach arms and monitor(s): Fit the arm clamps near the desk’s strong centerline. Rehang the displays and retension the gas spring per the weight.

  • Reconnect keypad and controller: Seat connectors firmly; avoid pinching wires. A loose keypad cable can cause intermittent errors.

Reset, re-level and re-torque

  • Hard reset the desk: With weight off, lower to the very bottom and hold “down” until you feel a slight bounce (varies by brand). This recalibrates travel.

  • Level the feet: If the desk rocks, adjust glides until it sits flat. On carpet, a firm pad under feet can help.

  • Tighten everything: Re-torque frame bolts, crossmembers and arm joints. Moves loosen hardware; a snug frame is a quiet, stable frame.

Rebuild your ergonomics

  • Eye line first: Set the monitor so the top third meets or sits slightly below your eye level in Sit and Stand. Arm’s-length distance is your baseline.

  • Save presets: Program Sit, Stand, Type (slightly lower) and Call (slightly higher). Label them so switching is one tap.

  • Mat position: Place the anti-fatigue mat where your feet land at Stand; slide it under the front edge when seated.

Cable slack test (don’t skip)

  • Service loops: Create gentle U-shaped slack for every moving cable above the tray. Raise and lower the desk slowly while watching each line.

  • Wall clearance: At full height, the rear edge shouldn’t press cables into the wall. If it does, move the desk 1–2 inches forward.

  • Buzz hunt: If you hear a rattle mid-rise, pad the contact point with felt or reroute the line.

Troubleshooting after a move

  • “Desk stops short or shows an error.” Perform a full reset; reseat keypad and motor connectors; remove any binding in cable bundles near legs.

  • “Wobble at full height.” Retighten frame bolts, bring heavy items closer to the columns and lower the monitor by 0.5 inch to reduce leverage.

  • “Monitor arm drifts.” Increase tension per the arm manual; ensure the display weight is within spec.

  • “Static zaps ports.” Increase room humidity to 40–50 percent; route the mains cable in a leg raceway and avoid dragging wool fabrics across cable jackets.

A 7-day post-move check

  • Re-torque: Tighten frame and arm fasteners; components settle after a week.

  • Slack review: Run full range while checking loops and wall clearance once more.

  • Preset sanity: Nudge heights by 0.25 inch if shoulders felt tight or wrists extended during the week.

A quick moving-day checklist

  • Photos shot; cables labeled both ends; small parts bagged.

  • Monitors, arms and heavy items removed; tray emptied.

  • Frame carried upright; desktop corners protected; keypad secured.

  • Tray, surge strip and dock reinstalled; single mains cable in leg raceway.

  • Desk reset, leveled and re-torqued; presets saved; mat placed.

The bottom line Moving a standing desk is easy when you respect the mechanics. Photograph, label, and pack the ecosystem, not just the furniture. Keep legs upright, re-torque after arrival, and rebuild eye line and presets before your first long session. With clean power and cable slack restored, your height-adjustable desk will feel as smooth and stable as day one—in a brand-new spot.
